NECC Presents Research in 50+ Symposia, Workshops, Papers and Posters

Southborough, Mass. – April 24, 2018 – The New England Center for Children® (NECC®), a global leader in education for children with autism, announced today their research presentations at two premier applied behavior analysis (ABA) conferences – the 2018 APBA Convention and ABAI’s 44th Annual Convention. Over the course of the two events, NECC behavior analysts and researchers will participate in more than 50 presentations including symposia, panels, papers, workshops, tutorials, and posters. Dedicated to the dissemination of best practices in ABA, NECC researchers have been widely published in journals and books.

The 2018 APBA Convention was held on April 19-21, 2018, in St. Louis, MO. APBA is the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts, an industry group for the advancement of applied behavior analysis. The ABAI Annual Convention will be held May 24-28, 2018, in San Diego, CA. ABAI is the Association for Behavior Analysis International, a membership organization for those interested in the philosophy, science, application, and teaching of behavior analysis.

Presentations at APBA’s 8th Annual Convention The following are highlights from the more than dozen presentations given by NECC staff at APBA.
• Panel: Examining training and supervision practice for staff providing behavior analytic services to persons with severe challenging behavior. Chaired by W.H. Ahearn.
• Symposium: Measuring the effects of reinforcers. Chaired by J.C. Bourret.
• Paper Presentation: An analysis of work completion during psychotropic medication titrations in individuals with developmental disabilities. By L.A. Craddock, A.E. Maley & J.C. Bourret.
• Paper Presentation: Teaching social initiations via direct instruction and preferred social consequences. By K.A. McBride & W.H. Ahearn.

Presentations at ABAI’s 44th Annual Convention The following are highlights from the more than 40 presentations that will be given by NECC staff at ABAI. Session times and locations are available in the ABAI Convention program guide, available here.
• Symposium: Behavior analytic strategies for enhancing quality of life in individuals with developmental disabilities. Chaired by S. Bancroft.
• Paper Presentation: Response interruption and redirection treatment integrity considerations. By C. Colon-Kwedor, K. Gauthier & W.H. Ahearn.
• Paper Presentation: Use of denial-delay tolerance training in the treatment of ritualistic and stereotypic behavior. By D. DeLisle & J.L. Thomason-Sassi.
• Workshop: Caught on camera: Creating video models to improve our teaching. By E. Giles & R.P.F. MacDonald.

NECC’s focus on education, technology, and ABA research drives their success in helping transform the lives of children with autism and their families. NECC research is conducted at the school and the results form a continuous feedback of best practice curriculum refinement. The research is also integrated into the Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia, or ACE® ABA Software System, a cloud-based teaching system that includes more than 2,100 customizable lesson plans, paperless teaching and data collection, multiple assessments, and automated graphing. The ACE ABA Software System is currently used by more than 6,100 students and teachers in 27 states and 10 countries.

NECC’s research initiatives are enhanced by its graduate degree programs. In partnership with local colleges, NECC awarded 105 master’s degrees in ABA and special education, and 1 PhD in 2017. NECC researchers and behavioral analysts have been widely published in journals. Publications in 2017 included the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis, Journal of Special Education, The Behavior Analyst, Encyclopedia of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Scientific Reports, and the Handbook of Autism Treatments. In press for 2018 are articles in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis, Behavioral Interventions, Autism Research, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Education and Treatment of Children, Applied Behavior Analysis Advanced Guidebook, and others.
